The house I grew up in, and the loft I live in today, have what is called "wabi-sabi." This is a Japanese aesthetic stemming from Taoism and Zen Buddhism that honors the simple and unpretentious (wabi) and the beauty that can only come with age (sabi).

Sometimes an act of kindness requires a sacrifice and a shift—doing something that we would not normally do, reaching out to someone we would not normally interact with. But those little courtesies we do without thinking—opening a door or smiling to someone in the elevator—count, too.
