I can remember clearly the conversation during which I realized that expectations are what create disappointments. I was talking with a friend and was stringing together a number of expectations in a row, along the lines of "If I do this, then this will happen," and "If I don't do that, then that won't happen." And he said, "You don't know any of that. The future is God's domain."

When I heard that the day's theme was "Hands On," I assumed it was going to be about prayer beads. I'm not sure when I began making that automatic association for hands and spirituality. It may have been about the time I discovered that I could type without thinking.
