It's the season of giving, which is why I was so inspired by the New Morning show on "Giving Back." I got so many ideas for my holiday giving! My husband and I have told our friends and relatives that we already have too much stuff so from now on, we would prefer that any gifts coming our way either be expendable (candles, soaps) or eatable (nuts, fruit). My brother responded with one of the best gifts we get for Christmas.

Native American spirituality is about peace with Earth, rather than peace on Earth. I found that just a wonderful distinction. Too often throughout history, humans have assumed that we have the right to subjugate the things of the Earth—whether animals we take for food, mountains we mine for minerals, or water we divert for our irrigation channels. We live on the Earth, but not comfortably and respectfully with it.

I went to a memorial service last weekend for the Rev. Al Carmines, who was, in the '60s and '70s, one of the pastors of our church, Judson Memorial Church in Greenwich Village. I couldn't stop thinking about Al when I was watching the show on Getting Unstuck. Al really knew about getting unstuck.

A bowl is filled with water and passed around the table. You put your hand in the water and then your neighbor dries your hands before you pass the bowl on. For a second go-around, you touch your finger to your heart and then to the tip of your neighbor's finger. No words are said. They are not needed. All the elements for community building are already present: participation, service, reaching out to others, respect for each other's uniqueness, feelings of mutuality.
